They are something unclear, like a spirit that only I have recognised.I can barely hear their breaths when I become one with nature and listen carefully. They seem to inhabit a world that has been untouched since before I was conscious of them. Since I was little, I have always been surrounded by nature. In Japan, Gods are said to exist in all things, and my hometown has a number of events related to this idea. When the light or wind talks to me; when I am embraced by the darkness; when I smell the soil or grass; or when I hear a whisper of green leaves, a truly natural scene appears with joy, sorrow or other emotions and ‘them’ grows inside me.The environment in which I grew up created all sorts of ‘them’ inside me.However, I have been frustrated because I can never touch or see it. There are days when I can’t stay who I am unless I sometimes paralyse my sensibility due to information overload.Meanwhile, ‘they’ are isolated from the chaotic information society and remain undisturbed in the untouched world.I admire them for their presence, as if I were looking longingly at shining jewels, and I spend my days hoping to be like them, whenever possible. At these times, I strongly feel they are the ones that make me who I am and that must never be forgotten. Picking up those that I can definitely feel, I hope they will take on an existence that affirms the real nature of the wearer while resonating with nature and others.I entrust my longings to jewellery. About the working process: My creation begins with a drawing as if I am collecting the ‘something’ that has gathered around the place of me.I draw with a pencil or pen and use collage techniques. By using collage, it is possible to reduce the number of touches and create a picture in a purer manner. I then make jewellery based on my drawings. My artworks are made using the traditional Japanese technique of cloisonné. The reason for using cloisonné is that its pieces are delicate but immutable while the beauty peculiar to glass appeals to my instinct and urges me to express. Furthermore, drawing is the first stage of my creative process, where cloisonné enables me to treat the glaze like paints. My creations are based on the traditional technique of wired cloisonné, where I carefully polish the surface to sharpen the silver wire and bring about a pattern. To achieve the best expression, I also employ some unique techniques of my own. For example, I partially apply excessive glaze or shave off the surface as part of an expression or roughen the surface for a matte finish. 小室えみ香
